Maryland does not use a Texas-style split between a county clerk and a district clerk for trial-court records. In Prince George's County, the primary record custodian for Circuit Court case files and many local legal records is the Clerk of the Circuit Court. The current Clerk is Mahasin El Amin. The office is a locally elected state official within the judicial branch, with duties regulated by Maryland law and court rules.

The Clerk files, processes, and maintains civil, criminal, and juvenile actions. The office also records and electronically maintains land deeds, mortgages, plats, conveyances, and other land documents. It issues business licenses and marriage licenses, performs civil marriage ceremonies, administers oaths to notaries public and officials, and serves residents who need court records, land records, licenses, or official copies.

What the Clerk Does in Prince George's County

The Clerk's responsibilities cut across several record categories. Criminal Division maintains Circuit Court criminal files and is responsible for docketing pleadings, issuing summons, subpoenas, warrants, body attachments, and writs, and handling bonds. Civil Law and Equity handles major civil files, while other division contacts cover appeals, foreclosures, marriage and business licenses, and official copy requests.

• Certified copies: official copies of eligible records held by the Clerk or division that created the file.
• Land records: deeds, mortgages, plats, conveyances, and related recording functions through Maryland land-record systems.

Request a Certified Copy

Maryland Courts says paper court records are kept at the courthouse where the case was heard. With exceptions, anyone may view records in person at the clerk's office. A requester should provide the case number; if no case number is known, the clerk may be able to locate the file using party names. Copies are available for a fee, and certified copies must come from the official custodian rather than a third-party search result.

1. Search Maryland Case Search first to identify the case number, court, case type, party names, and filing or disposition date.
2. Confirm whether the case was heard in Circuit Court, District Court Upper Marlboro, District Court Hyattsville, or another court.
3. Contact the Clerk division that holds the file and ask what copy fee, certification fee, and payment method apply.
4. Provide case number, party names, document title, number of copies, requester contact information, and mailing address.
5. Use mail or in-person service when the document is not available online or when an official seal is required.

Certified Copy Request Fields

The research file contains a full certified marriage license request inventory. For court case records, the same practical data points help the Clerk locate the file, but the fee and document rules should be verified with the division that holds the record. Do not mail payment for an unknown court copy fee without confirming the amount first.

Prince George's County Clerk Fees

The research did not provide a complete Clerk court-document fee table for every case type, so the safe practice is to verify court-copy fees with the relevant division before sending payment. Confirmed local and related fees include certified marriage license copies, civil ceremonies, replacement marriage licenses, estate copies through the Register of Wills, and MVA records that are outside the Clerk's office.

Online Clerk Record Access

The Clerk page routes public court-case lookups primarily through statewide Maryland Case Search, not a separate county-built portal. Maryland Case Search provides summaries of District Court and Circuit Court cases, but the official case file remains with the court. Maryland Electronic Courts is the e-filing and document-access system for parties and attorneys; attorneys must use MDEC, while public use and public document access are subject to court rules.

Land records are available through MdLandRec with a free account, and plats are available through Plats.net. Older records, sealed records, certified copies, exhibits, transcripts, and documents not included online require direct contact with the Clerk division or court office that holds the record. Probate records are not Clerk of the Circuit Court records; use the Register of Wills and Orphans' Court for estate files.
