Use the case number first when it is printed on a notice, citation, summons, filing receipt, or prior order. Name searches can work, but names may include initials, suffixes, former names, agency names, spelling variations, or middle names. Narrowing by Prince George's County or by court type helps separate local cases from other Maryland results. Case Search does not replace the official file. Pleadings, exhibits, certified copies, and some electronic documents must be requested from the Clerk of the Circuit Court or the District Court clerk for the location that handled the case.

Prince George's County Record Types
Prince George's County court records come from more than one court. The Circuit Court is the general-jurisdiction court of record for felony criminal cases, major civil matters, jury trials, family law, divorce, juvenile matters, equity, and appeals from District Court. The District Court handles traffic, landlord-tenant, replevin, small claims, many misdemeanors, certain felonies, and civil claims within its statutory limits. Probate is separate from Case Search in daily practice because estates are handled by the Orphans' Court and Register of Wills.
Court records also vary by depth. A Case Search result may show a summary of a civil suit or criminal case, while the official file may contain pleadings, orders, exhibits, service papers, judgments, bond papers, or certified copies. Land deeds, mortgages, plats, and conveyances are Clerk of the Circuit Court functions but use land-record systems such as MdLandRec and Plats.net rather than ordinary court-case search.
- Civil records: lawsuits, foreclosures, injunctions, appeals, liens, name changes, landlord-tenant cases, small claims, and replevin.
- Criminal records: charging documents, indictments, pleas, motions, hearings, dispositions, sentencing, bond events, warrants, and financial obligations.

What Prince George's County Records Show
Maryland Judiciary describes Case Search as a public case-information system, not a complete document repository. A Prince George's County court records result can identify the court, case number, parties, case type, filing date, hearing or trial dates, and outcome fields. Criminal and traffic matters may show charges and dispositions when remote access rules permit. A missing online charge is not the same as proof that no courthouse record exists.

Prince George's County Access Rules
Judicial records are governed by the Maryland Rules on Access to Judicial Records, including the Rule 16-900 series. The practical rule is that court records are generally open unless a statute, court rule, or court order restricts them. Paper court records are kept at the courthouse where the case was heard, and Maryland Courts says the public may usually inspect those records in person. Copies are available for a fee set by the court or clerk.
Agency records are different. Police, sheriff, and corrections records are not court records simply because they relate to an arrest or case. Those requests usually go to the agency custodian under the Maryland Public Information Act, including the definitions in General Provisions section 4-101. For judicial files, use the Clerk of the Circuit Court, District Court clerk, Register of Wills, or courthouse public access terminal as the record source.

Restricted Prince George's County Records
Some Prince George's County court records are withheld, sealed, redacted, or not displayed remotely. Juvenile police and court records are confidential under Courts and Judicial Proceedings section 3-8A-27. Adoption files, mental-health material, confidential addresses, child information, financial account numbers, Social Security numbers, medical details, and sealed documents are not ordinary public search results.
Maryland also limits remote Case Search access to certain criminal outcomes. Maryland Courts reports that some charges with nolle prosequi, dismissal, acquittal or not guilty outcomes, older stet status, and certain cannabis-possession outcomes are no longer available remotely, even when courthouse inspection may still be possible. Expungement under Criminal Procedure section 10-105 and automatic expungement under section 10-105.1 can also remove qualifying police and court records from public view.
Prince George's County In-Person Records
For official Prince George's County court records, start with the court where the case was heard. Bring the case number if possible. If no case number is known, ask whether the clerk can search by party name, case type, and filing period. For Circuit Court matters, the Clerk of the Circuit Court maintains civil, criminal, juvenile, land, license, and copy records. For District Court matters, contact the Upper Marlboro or Hyattsville District Court location. Probate and estate files go through the Register of Wills and Orphans' Court.
Mail requests should identify the case number, party names, document requested, return contact information, and payment if the office has confirmed the amount. Call before mailing when a certified copy, archived file, sealed file review, or time-sensitive record is involved. Some courthouse kiosks may provide public electronic access, but MDEC document access is subject to Maryland rules and is not the same as a general public web download service.
